About half. Invoca puts the share of home services callers who speak with a person at 52%. When nobody picks up, four in five consumers say they simply call a competitor, and the callback often fails on its own, because most people do not answer a number they do not recognize.

How many garage door companies are there, and how much door is out there?

Around 11,000 dealers serve the United States, roughly one for every 30,000 people. Nearly every new house they will ever be called to has a garage: about nine in ten single-family homes completed in 2023 had one, and most households treat that door as the way into the building.

How long is a garage door spring supposed to last?

Long enough that most homeowners meet a technician once a decade. A residential door is expected to run fewer than 1,500 cycles a year, and springs are generally rated at 10,000 to 20,000 cycles. No standard sets that rating: the number comes from manufacturers, not from a specification.

The numbers we went looking for and could not find

These nine appear across this vertical, often several to a page. We tried to trace each one to a primary source: the study, the audit, the standard it supposedly comes from. None of them survived. They are published here, struck through, so nobody rebuilds them from a competitor's copy, and so you can check any page that quotes them.

No such report exists. Every page carrying it is an answering-service or call-tracking blog citing another blog, and the chain never reaches a primary document. The traceable replacement is Invoca's 52% of home services callers who reach a person, above.

Untraceable. The attribution shifts by teller and no published methodology exists anywhere. The real finding in the same territory is the MIT Sloan lead response decay, which is in the first section with its own caveats attached.

The demand pattern is real and well attested across trade sources: an early-morning spike when a car cannot get out, an evening spike when a door will not close, and a surge on the first cold morning. This site says that, and puts no percentage on it.

The CPSC injury database is a real primary source and these numbers may well be derivable from it. We could not reach it, and a number nobody on our side has pulled is not a number we publish. The safety rules on this site are written from the mechanics of the trade instead.

Irreconcilable with the trade's own dealer count of roughly 11,000 companies, above. Whatever it measures, it is not the population of garage door shops that answer emergency calls, so it is no use as an industry size here.

The one worth arguing about is the spring standard. It is repeated by companies who install springs for a living, it is stated as a specification, and the two documents it names are both downloadable. Reading them takes twenty minutes and settles it.
