Two vocabularies meet on a garage door call: the one a technician uses for the door, and the one a vendor uses for the phone. Both are here, defined in one sentence each, with what they change on a live call underneath.

Torsion spring
A torsion spring is the spring mounted on a shaft above the door opening that stores the energy needed to lift the door, winding tighter as the door closes and unwinding as it opens.
It is the part that ends a door's day. Callers rarely name it: they say there was a bang, or the door will not lift, or the opener strains and the door moves a few inches. A wound torsion spring holds the weight of the whole door, which is why nobody who answers a phone should ever be talking a caller through touching one.
Extension spring
An extension spring is the long spring that runs alongside the horizontal track and stretches as the door closes, doing the same lifting job as a torsion spring from a different position.
Older and lighter residential doors often run a pair. Which type a door has changes what a technician loads on the truck, so it is worth asking on the call: a spring above the opening is torsion, springs along the tracks either side are extension.
Winding cone
A winding cone is the fitting on the end of a torsion spring, drilled with holes for winding bars and locked to the shaft by set screws, through which the spring's tension is applied and held.
It is the point where the whole load is controlled by two set screws, and the reason spring work is done with both hands and full attention.
Winding bars
Winding bars are the two steel rods a technician inserts into the winding cone to wind or unwind a torsion spring, taking the spring's tension against their own body weight.
Nothing else in this trade is as un-interruptible. Bars go in, turns are counted, and set screws are tightened with the system still under load. That is the exact stretch of the day when the phone rings and cannot be answered.
Torsion tube (shaft)
The torsion tube is the steel shaft running across the top of the door opening that carries the torsion springs and the cable drums, transferring the spring's twist into lift on both sides of the door.
Cable drum
A cable drum is the grooved wheel at each end of the torsion tube that winds and unwinds the lift cable, converting the shaft's rotation into the vertical pull that raises the door.
If a drum slips on the shaft, one side lifts and the other does not, and the door goes crooked in the opening. A caller will describe exactly that without ever using the word drum.
Lift cable
A lift cable is the steel cable running from the bottom bracket at the base of the door up to the cable drum, carrying the door's weight on each side.
Frayed and snapped cables are a common call, and they usually arrive as the door is hanging crooked or it came off the track. A visibly broken cable means the door stops being operated until a technician is there.
Bottom bracket
The bottom bracket is the fitting at each lower corner of the door where the lift cable attaches, and it stays under the full tension of the spring system whenever the door is closed.
Trade shorthand calls it the last part anybody should unbolt on a closed door.
End bearing plate
An end bearing plate is the bracket at each end of the torsion tube that holds the bearing the shaft turns in, mounted to the wall or the vertical track angle above the door.
Center bearing bracket
The center bearing bracket is the anchor plate in the middle of the header that holds the stationary cones of the torsion springs and takes their reaction load into the building.
When it pulls away from the header, the whole spring assembly shifts and the door stops traveling straight. That is a header repair, not a spring swap, and it is worth knowing before quoting.
Roller
A roller is the small wheel on a stem that rides inside the track and guides each section of the door as it travels.
Worn nylon or steel rollers are the classic noisy-door call: grinding, rumbling, a door you can hear from inside the house. It is routine, schedulable work and should never be booked as an emergency.
Track
The track is the steel channel, vertical up each side of the opening and then curving to horizontal along the ceiling, that the rollers run in to hold the door in its path.
Off track is a distinct failure and a serious one: the door is being held by whatever rollers and brackets are still engaged, and the next cycle is what brings it down.
Photo eye (safety sensor)
Photo eyes are the pair of sensors mounted a few inches off the floor on each side of the opening, which project an invisible beam across the doorway and reverse a closing door if anything breaks it.
Misalignment, a dirty lens, a spider web, low sun straight into the receiver, a knocked bracket. This is the most common cause of a will-not-close call, and it presents as a door that starts down and comes straight back up. Sorting it from a spring fault before dispatch is the difference between a small job and an emergency truck roll that nobody bills for.
Limit settings
Limit settings are the opener's stored travel points, telling it how far to run in each direction before stopping.
Set short and the door stops with a gap at the floor. Set long and the door hits the floor and bounces back up, which callers usually report as the door reversing on its own.
Emergency release cord
The emergency release cord is the red handle hanging from the opener rail that disconnects the door from the opener trolley so the door can be moved by hand.
It exists for a power cut on a closed door. Pulling it on an open door, or on a door whose spring may already be broken, hands the entire unsupported weight to whoever is standing under it. No receptionist, human or otherwise, should ever suggest it on a call.
Cycle
One cycle is the door traveling from closed, to fully open, and back to closed, which is the unit every spring rating and maintenance interval in the trade is counted in.
ANSI/DASMA 102, the sectional door specification, sets the expectation that a residential door is operated fewer than 1,500 cycles a year. A four-person household on a two-car door blows past that; a rolling steel door on a busy loading dock is in another league entirely, which is why commercial doors are serviced on a schedule and houses are serviced on a breakdown.
Cycle rating (and the specification that does not exist)
A cycle rating is the number of cycles a spring's manufacturer expects it to survive, commonly 10,000 to 20,000 cycles for a torsion spring, which is roughly 8 to 15 years of ordinary residential use.
You will read across this industry that the trade association mandates a floor of 10,000 cycles for residential springs. It does not. ANSI/DASMA 103 and DASMA Technical Data Sheet #190 were both downloaded and searched in full while this glossary was written, and neither publishes a cycle count of any kind; TDS #190 lists the things that shorten spring life and stops there. The rating is the spring maker's number, and it is the honest way to talk about it on a quote.
Sectional door
A sectional door is the standard residential garage door: four or five horizontal panels hinged together, running up the vertical track and back along the ceiling on rollers.
Roll-up (rolling steel) door
A rolling steel door is a commercial door made of interlocking steel slats that coils around a barrel above the opening instead of running back along a ceiling track.
Different parts, different pricing, different technician. A rolling steel door down at a warehouse is a business that cannot ship, so it triages as urgent even though nobody is trapped.
Dock door
A dock door is the door at a loading bay, usually sectional or rolling steel, working alongside the dock leveler, bumpers and seals that let a trailer back up tight to the building.
Counter door
A counter door is a small rolling door that closes over a service counter or a serving window, common in kitchens, pharmacies, concession stands and bars.
Fire door drop test
A fire door drop test is the annual inspection in which a rolling fire door is released and allowed to close under its own weight to prove it will still shut in a fire, then reset and documented.
NFPA 80 requires it every year, which makes it the rare commercial job that is scheduled rather than broken: recurring, plannable revenue that a phone line has to be able to book and diary a year out.
Chain, belt and screw drive
Drive type is how an opener moves the trolley along its rail: a chain, a reinforced rubber belt, or a threaded steel screw.
Belt drives are the quiet ones and the usual answer when a caller says the opener is loud enough to wake the house. Capturing the drive type on the call decides what goes on the van when an opener is being replaced.
Opener brands
The opener brands a garage door phone line hears named are LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman, Overhead Door, Wayne Dalton, Sommer and Marantec.
LiftMaster and Chamberlain come from the same manufacturer: LiftMaster is the professional channel, Chamberlain the retail one, and the remote a caller is holding may say either. Knowing that on the phone saves a conversation that starts with the customer being told they own the wrong thing.

Speed to lead
Speed to lead is the time between a prospect's first contact and your first response, and it is one of the strongest predictors of whether that prospect becomes a customer.
In this trade it collapses to something simpler: the industry's own trade journal says the company that responds first typically gets the job regardless of price. An unanswered call has a response time of never.
First-call resolution
First-call resolution is the share of callers whose reason for calling is finished on the first call, with no callback, no second call and no waiting for a return.
For a garage door shop it means the caller hangs up with a date, a time window and a price range, rather than with a promise that somebody will get back to them.
Abandonment
Abandonment is a caller hanging up before reaching anyone, usually while ringing or on hold, and it is counted as a share of total inbound calls.
It is the metric a shared call center reports and an owner never sees. On a broken spring at 7am, an abandoned call is not a lost inquiry: it is a job that has just been booked somewhere else.
Per-minute billing
Per-minute billing charges for the time an agent spends on your calls, usually as a monthly plan with a bundle of included minutes and an overage rate beyond them.
Published human answering plans run from $250 a month for 50 included minutes to $1,725 a month for 500, which is $3.45 to $5.00 per included minute. The meter runs hardest in the week you bought the coverage for.
Missed-call-only mode (forward on no-answer)
Missed-call-only mode uses conditional call forwarding to send only the calls you do not pick up to a receptionist, so your own phone rings exactly as it does today and the safety net catches what falls.
It is the lowest-commitment way to adopt any answering product: the number on the trucks does not change, and every caught call is recorded, so the value is provable job by job.
Job card
A job card is the structured record produced by a call: name, callback number, address, the symptom, the door and opener details, the urgency, and what was quoted or booked.
On a garage door call the fields that earn their place are the ones that load the truck: torsion or extension, one spring or two, single or double door, opener brand and drive type.
Escalation
Escalation is the rule that decides which calls interrupt a human immediately rather than waiting in a queue or a morning summary.
The three triggers in this trade are a person or vehicle shut in, a building left open and unsecured, and a business unable to ship. Everything else can wait until the bars are out of the cone.
Transcript
A transcript is the written record of what was said on a call, produced automatically alongside the recording.
It settles the argument that starts when a customer says they were quoted a number. It is also how you check that a range was quoted the way you publish it, and that nobody was told to touch a spring.
Latency
Latency, on a phone line, is the gap between the caller finishing a sentence and the receptionist starting to reply.
It is the difference between sounding like a person and sounding like a machine. A caller who has to say hello twice assumes nobody is there, and starts dialing the next company while your line is still connected. How to time it on any vendor is on the latency page.
